Description
Composition is as important to creating good photographs as grammar is to writing. My approach is based on principles that have their roots in Gestalt psychology. They are easy to understand and remember for they are based on common sense findings. They have worked well for me and for my students over the years. Some additional principles highly relevant to composition and to your photography will also be shown. Our day will consist of: 1. Introduction: A visual presentation of Gestalt compositional principles and related principles using important photographs by Cartier-Bresson, Bruce Davidson, Henry Jackson, August Sander, Edward Weston and others; paintings by Arcimboldo, Escher, Michelangelo and Grant Wood. 2. Application: An opportunity for you to apply some of these principles by taking photographs during the day. 3. Critique: We will end with a group critique of your photographs based on the principles introduced. Bring your current portfolio and have it critiqued by a master.
