“There is a world of extraordinary beauty and fascinating details existing just beyond our vision that I try to visit whenever I can.” With these words, professional photographer Joseph Meehan introduces the ways in which close-up images can be produced using everything from sophisticated SLRs and simple digital cameras to flatbed and film scanners, copy stands as well as specialized close-up lighting equipment such as ring lights, a lighting stall and tent lighting. Meehan will present key information using many of the illustrations from his recent book: “The Magic of Digital Close-Up Photography.” There will also be a guest expert who will give a demonstration on how to use a flatbed scanner for close-up photography.
You will photograph subject matter of your choice under artificial light in the Centre’s lighting studio and natural light and/or on-camera flash during two field trips. The over all goal of the workshop is to demonstrate the extraordinary range of potential subject matter and the most effective methods that can capture these subjects. This workshop is very much about developing effective close-up skills as well as exploring new avenues for personal expression by examining different close-up styles and compositions. An SLR camera is required along with some form of close-up equipment.
Joseph Meehan has been a professional photographer, writer and teacher for more than 35 years. Over a thousand of his images have appeared in books, magazines and advertisements as well as on Web sites all over the world. Meehan’s work has been profiled in many photography magazines including, Popular Photography, Outdoor Photography, View Camera Magazine, Shutterbug and the British Journal of Photography. He was also the Senior Technical Editor of Photo District News for over a decade, and the editor of the UK publication, The Photography Yearbook.
