Description

Photoshop can be a complex program, but the tools for making great black and white prints need not be. George Schaub, who taught a Master B&W Printing Course at New School University in New York, draws upon the tools and techniques of the silver darkroom to create a simplified, yet rich printing workflow. The course covers quality color conversion techniques for creating custom tonal values, image controls for both overall and local contrast and tonal creation, toning and duotone techniques and sharpening methods that bring out the best in every image. Layers, layer masks, and customized “burn and dodge” techniques are also covered. By the end of the course attendees will have mastered a simple but effective method for making great prints.

The course starts out with sharing prints and group discussion of each attendee’s intentions and goals for the week. This is followed by group technique sessions, including workflow and a simple five step method for printmaking. The major work of the week is making the best and most expressive prints possible from each attendee’s images. There will be frequent critique sessions throughout the week, where we share ideas, techniques and image enhancement strategies. We will break one morning or afternoon for a shooting session where we can learn about exposure and other techniques for producing great images for printing.

Participants should bring:
Prints from past work
Image files to work on
A digital camera or film camera
(Note: if you have slides or negs we can work in a scanning session as well.)
Blank CDs or DVDs.
Paper you might like to print on (note that there will be paper available for sale for printing at the workshop.)
Ideas, inspiration and a willingness to share with others

Experience level: Attendees should have a basic working knowledge of Photoshop and how to access images from their files.

We will work with:
Photoshop CS4
Adobe Camera Raw
Adobe Bridge
Epson pigment ink printers
