In Person – Lightroom Classic CC Master Class with John Reuter

March 10, 2023 @ 10:00 am - March 12, 2023 @ 5:00 pm

Lightroom has evolved over the last decade to be a primary choice for photographer’s image editing needs. Its focus is on the specific tools photographers need, setting it apart from Adobe’s companion program Photoshop and its broader toolset for designers and graphic artists. The most recent updates have added significant AI driven tools for selecting and masking that rival Photoshop’s pixel driven tools.
In this three-day workshop we will explore the entire workflow of Lightroom but with an emphasis on the powerful tools in the Develop Module. What sets Lightroom apart from the Adobe Bridge/Camera Raw workflow is that Lightroom is a database which offers powerful tools for importing, organizing, and exporting your images. We will begin there to establish a strong foundation for processing and enhancing your images.
Our main emphasis will be the Develop Module, which has added more and more tools for perfecting your images. We will establish a workflow beginning with the Basic tab, setting our color balance, evaluating the histogram, and specifically working with the four key tonal areas, highlights, shadows, blacks, and whites. We will explore when and how to use Dehaze, Vibrance, Clarity, and Texture to transform our raw files into finished photographs. From here we will explore beyond the basics with a look at Curves, the Hue, Saturation and Luminance panel, Color Grading, Lens Corrections and much more.
We will spend a lot of time on the new AI enhanced selections. AI masking is being upgraded with new tools such as Select People, Select Objects, and one-click Select Background. The Select People feature can automatically detect and create layer masks in high detail, even on specific areas of a subject. The face, body, skin, eyes, teeth, lips, hair, and more can be detected with a single click, eliminating the time-consuming need to carefully create your own masks with the back and forth of painting and erasing to get the perfect mask. Once these masks are created you have access to a full set of development tools such as color temperature, the entire set of exposure controls and the presence controls such as texture, clarity and dehaze.
Select Objects will similarly detect and mask objects in Lightroom using the Brush Select tool. AI will then automatically refine the edges of your selection to create a mask, which can detect fine details such as stray hair and eyelashes. One-Click Select Background will use a similar AI-powered feature to eradicate the need to invert a mask of a subject to change its backdrop, allowing you to directly generate a background mask with a single click.
Finally, we will explore the Export options in Lightroom from printing to slideshows as well as prepping images for the web. It will be an action packed three days. Bring your camera and a group of raw images to fully explore the wonders of Lightroom Classic CC.
