LIMITED TO 8 STUDENTS

In The Master Black and White Print workshop, you will explore the various techniques used to create a perfect black and white print. There is more than one way to convert an image from full color to black and white. Many of the basic techniques available can leave you with a print that looks obviously edited in Photoshop. We will go over a handful of different techniques, which ones to use and which to avoid, and how to best apply these techniques to your images and get the best true to black and white print possible.

This workshop takes a practical application approach to when, why, and how to convert an image. In it, you learn which methods give you the best results and when to choose a simple or a complex solution.

Some of the topics covered in this workshop are:

  • Global de-saturation: When and why you should and should not use it.
  • LAB conversions: When and why you should and should not use it.
  • Split Channel conversions: What they are good for. How to use to get the same effect with a file two thirds the size.
  • Black and White adjustment layers: When to use to bring out and separate the tones in a color image.
  • Silver Efex Plug-in: A complete overview of how to use it and when.
  • Multiple Channel mixer black and white conversions that replicate the physics of film.
  • Faux-infrared: What is it?
  • How to convert files, from a digital camera that has been modified to shoot Infrared, to black and white.
  • Gradient tool for black and white conversion: When and how to most efficiently use.
  • Mid-tone Contouring
  • Combining multiple conversion techniques to get the optimum black and white image.

Photoshop Actions have already been made and will be available for every technique that will be shown for Photoshop CS4, CS5 and CS6 …. AND if you are using CS5 and CS6, the actions have been made into a Configuration panel that will help to speed up your image production workflow.

Class needs:

Please bring 6 image files you have worked on in preparation of printing them along with the original Raw file of each image on a thumb drive or an external hard drive.
