The Master Print with Vincent Versace

March 9, 2020 @ 9:30 am - March 11, 2020 @ 5:30 pm

“I was taught that the best photographers were also the best printers. This means that the best photographers understood and experimented with all that was possible in the darkroom while being aware of certain limitations. The eye always trumps technique, but an eye without technique produces little of the artists’ voice.

All decisions about a final print are best made at the point of capture, and all decisions are informed by your understanding of printing. The more you understand about the middle process (photo editing), the more informed your decision can be at the beginning (the point of capture), because everything you do is in service of the print and the goal of every print is to be in service of your voice.”

-Vincent Versace

The focus of this workshop is fine-art digital printing. You will explore the software tools (correcting color casts, adjustment layers, Black and White conversions that replicate the look of silver prints), color management, custom profile, and workflow considerations that you will use  to create prints.  Those prints will translate your artistic voice into something people can see spoken into your printed images.

You will use Epson inkjet printers, with color and black/gray ink combinations utilizing coated and fine art rag papers. By the end of the week, you will have mastered all the key techniques to make the best quality prints of your images.

“The negative is everything. The Print is all. The negative is the sheet music. The print is the symphony.”

–Ansel Adams

I am truly looking forward to the week we will be spending with each other!

To make this the most successful of experiences bring with you the following things:

1) One black and white print you have made on your printer (8.5×11 or 13×19)
2) One color print you have made on your printer (8.5×11 or 13×19)
3) Six “finished files” (files that represent your state of your art) 3 vertical, 3 horizontal of which 3 need to be in color 3 in B&W.   The prints must be in a PSD file format with all of the layers (un-flattened)
4) The RAW files for each of the 6 finished files you selected

Bring your camera and a tripod. You will be doing some shooting. Why you ask? Because, the consideration of a great print happens at the point of capture.
