Student Information

Digital Imaging Workshops

Equipment

If you are taking a photography workshop, or if your workshop includes a field component, you should bring a Digital SLR with your favorite lenses and any accessories that you feel you will need for your specific Workshop. Suggested accessories to bring are: flash, tripod, cable release, filters, etc. Please make sure you bring enough memory cards. With the advent of digital capture, the Photographic Centre's offerings are designed to benefit and equally serve film and digital photographers, the choice of capture being a personal selection and the camera simply a means to an end. All classrooms have a computer workstation for viewing of digital images.

If you are taking a computer class, you should bring some of your digital images. The course instructor will also provide images to work on. Palm Beach Photographic Centre labs are fully equipped with high-performance Macintosh computers. In addition, our computer labs are equipped with Epson Stylus 3800 Photo printers, as well as the 4880 and 7880 Epson's Stylus wide format printers. Participants view instructor's work through Epson's Powerlite multimedia projectors. One-day seminars do not include printing, unless specifically indicated in the course description.

The Imaging Overview workshop is recommended for those who are not familiar with Macintosh computers or for anyone who would like a refresher course prior to their upcoming workshops.

Computer Lab

Participants have exclusive access to a single workstation during the workshop. The workshops generally run from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm each day with a one-and-a-half hour break for lunch. Teaching assistants will be available to answer any questions that you may have.

The Imaging Overview workshop is recommended for those who are not familiar with Macintosh or PC computers or for anyone who would like a refresher course prior to their upcoming workshop. If you wish to take home the images you have created, please bring an external drive or a CD-ROM, or you may purchase one at The PRO SHOP for this purpose.

Photography Workshops

It is highly recommended that you bring a portfolio containing examples of your work. Your portfolio will enable the instructor to review your past work to compare with your progress during the workshop. Submission of a portfolio may be a prerequisite for acceptance in certain workshops. Simply send us (10) duplicate slides or 8" x 10" unmounted prints, or a CD. (The Centre will not be responsible for original artwork.) Acceptance into the workshop cannot be determined until portfolios are received. Be sure to include a stamped, self-addressed envelope so that we can return your work.

Miscellaneous

Portfolio Review

It is strongly recommended that you bring your portfolio or some examples of your work for the instructor to review the first day. It is important for an instructor to know what you are doing both past and present. Your portfolio will enable them to properly guide you during your workshop. You will learn from each other during the week, not only from portfolio reviews, but also from what each person produces.

Supplies

The ProShop, the Centre's supply store located within our facility, is run by photographers, for photographers. For your convenience, The ProShop was designed to facilitate your workshop experience, both during and after. Items range from the complete line of Leica, Nikon and Canon cameras and lenses, hard to find specialty equipment, Epson printers and inks, Enduro tripods, to Think Tank camera bags.

Over 1000 different photography books and virtually anything you'll need for the digital darkroom, such as hard drives for backing up files, "in the field" download devices, a complete selection of different memory cards and, if you look very hard, you might just find a roll or two of film.

Many of the books in the ProShop are signed First Editions by many of our instructors. This is a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the History of Photography. Remember, "Much of the history of Photography we teach was made by the people we taught".

Important: You may want to bring your favorite papers for printing from the computer, and a way to back up the image you create during the workshop. You may also purchase these items at The ProShop.

Attire

With the gentle breezes of the Gulf Stream and an average temperature of 72°, clothing should be light, comfortable and casual. A sweater or windbreaker might be needed for cooler night temperatures. Men should consider packing a sports coat because of dress requirements at some of the area's more formal restaurants. Don't forget a swimsuit for an occasional dip in our warm tropical waters!

Liability, Refunds, Cancellations

Liability

In the event a workshop is cancelled, for any reason, the extent of our liability is limited to the return of fees paid to us. All workshop participants accept full responsibility for personal injury and/or personal losses during the period of the workshop, and are required to sign a waiver of responsibility. Applications and payments are an acknowledgment of the terms and conditions as outlined in this brochure.

NOTE: The Palm Beach Photographic Centre assumes no liability for non-refundable airline tickets that cannot be used due to workshop cancellations or misprints in this catalog. PBPC advises that you not purchase a non-refundable airline ticket. Schedule changes occasionally occur at the Centre, beyond our control, and we cannot be responsible for non-refundable airline tickets.

Transportation and Accommodations

DO NOT purchase a non-refundable airline ticket in case of schedule changes. The Centre will not be responsible for non-refundable airline tickets!

The Palm Beach International Airport is 5 miles south and Ft. Lauderdale International Airport is 52 miles south of PBPC. If driving from Palm Beach or Fort Lauderdale Airports, take I-95 north to Okeechobee Blvd. east (exit 70) toward downtown. Go east on Okeechobee to Quadrille. Turn left on Quadrille and go north to Banyan. Make a right on Banyan, and toward the end of the street, before you get to the corner, there will be an entrance into the City Center parking lot. When you come out of the parking lot into the courtyard, the Photo Centre building is on the left.

Refunds

If PBPC needs to cancel a workshop, all deposits will be refunded IN FULL. If you decide to withdraw from a workshop, please inform us at least 30 days before the first day of classes; we will refund your deposits, less a $100 withdrawal fee. Our obligations to the professionals who instruct at the Centre dictate that no refund of payments will be made to you if you do not notify us of your withdrawal 30 days (120 days for travel workshops) before the start of the workshop. In the event that a replacement is found to fill your vacant space, all payments, less the withdrawal fee, will be refunded. No refund of fees will be made for no-shows or for withdrawal after the workshop begins. Subject to applicable provisions of law, we reserve the right to deny any applicant.

Occasionally, it may be necessary to postpone or cancel a particular workshop. Although a rarity, an instructor may be called away to a late-breaking assignment, or enrollment may not reach the minimum necessary to hold a workshop. In both cases, we will immediately inform all registrants of a substitute workshop instructor, an alternative workshop, or offer the opportunity to withdraw for a full refund. Please refer to your catalog for more complete information concerning our liability, refund and withdrawal policies. Please notify us as soon as possible if you have any course or lodging changes.

Workshop Cancellation

Because our instructors are working professional photographers, occasionally, it may be necessary to postpone or cancel a workshop. Though rare, an instructor may be called away to a late-breaking assignment. If the scheduled instructor becomes unavailable for the announced dates, we will immediately inform all registrants of a substitute workshop instructor, an alternative workshop, or offer the opportunity to withdraw. Anyone withdrawing will receive a FULL refund of all fees and deposits paid. Workshops in which enrollment does not exceed eight registrants are subject to cancellation. Notification of cancellation will be made at least 8 days prior to the beginning of classes. Fees and deposits paid will be refunded IN FULL, or we will suggest alternative courses. In the event of a workshop cancellation, you will be offered the opportunity to retain your hotel reservations at the specially reduced rates arranged for workshop participants. Membership fees are non-refundable.

Travel Photography Workshops

Travel Photography Workshops are a great experience, offering exceptional photo-ops, first-rate instructors, 4-star accommodations, delicious food and interesting companions. Your package price for each workshop includes tuition, hotel accommodations for the entire workshop period, breakfast and dinner daily, guide service, ground transportation and admission fees for specific area attractions. These prices are subject to change. Please check our web site for all updates as to prices and dates of departure. We select destinations based on their appeal for photographers of all styles and interests; the cultural locations we visit provide a wide array of vistas and cultures. Centre workshops abroad offer the same quality and professionalism you receive at our home in West Palm Beach. Master photographers and communicators such as Vincent Versace, Peter Turnley, John Isaac, and Rob Sheppard lead you toward one-of-a-kind images of subjects ranging from flowers to faces, from landscapes to architecture. We limit most workshops to 10 participants in order to guarantee hands-on individual instruction.

Getting There - Travel Workshops

Travel workshop dates do not include travel time. In many cases you need to depart the US one or two days prior. You are responsible for your air travel, although in many instances you can arrange it through our travel agent. Most destinations have flights from major American cities daily. A detailed and personalized itinerary and information package will be sent to you after registration for the ease of scheduling your flight. All land transportation is provided by FOTOtravel Workshops. Some trips require an additional fee for regional air transportation. Prices may vary from printed material, check with the Centre as your trip approaches to determine whether a price increase has occurred. You must have a valid passport in order to attend any international workshop.

Hotel Accomodations for Travel Workshops

FOTOtravel Workshops cater to participants who appreciate quality accommodations. Though each itinerary varies depending on the location and trip details, the Centre books mostly 4 star hotels. Some remote locations do not have a 4 star hotel, in which case we will book the best available. You may request single or double occupancy, but there is an additional charge for single occupancy. Where double-room occupancy is requested, the Centre will pair roommates on a first-come, first-serve basis. If a roommate is not available, you will be charged the single occupancy rate. Accommodations at some of our remote destinations may not allow for single occupancy, in which case you will have to share a room on those nights. If you would like additional nights, please contact us so that we can arrange it for you.

Digital Cameras on Travel Workshops

Digital camera users must bring their own laptop computer. Check with the manufacturer of the particular model to determine the appropriate electrical adapter for your electronic accessories and tools. Most digital devices have the capacity to convert 110-220 volts. Participants must understand their equipment and be able to download and backup their own Images. Our trips are so intense that there won’t be any time for instructors to download or backup anyone’s Images. It is highly recommended that each participant bring at least 5 one gig cards for their cameras and appropriate devices to download their Images to, such as an 80 gig Flashtrax or an Epson P-4000. If you prefer not to bring a laptop, then you should plan on bringing two backup devices. Sometimes a backup device crashes, and you don’t want to find yourself in a remote destinations without any means to back up your images. Our experience shows that many participants under-estimate the amount of storage that they will need.

Refunds and Cancellations for Travel Workshops

For Travel Workshops, all fees MUST be paid in full 120 days in advance of departure. If circumstances require you to cancel your FOTOtravel workshop, please notify us at least 120 days before the scheduled start date in writing. All but $300 (USD) of your money will be refunded if cancellation is made at least 120 days in advance. Cancellations made 60 through 119 days prior to departure will forfeit 50% of total fee paid (USD). Cancellations made less than 60 days from scheduled start will forfeit the entire package price, unless a replacement attendee signs up. In the event that a replacement attendee fills your vacant spot, all payments, less any fees already spent for transportation and a withdrawal fee of $300 USD will be refunded. No refund of fees will be provided for no-shows or for withdrawal after the workshop begins.
