Albert Watson is one of the world’s most successful and prolific photographers, blending art, fashion and commercial photography into stunning images. Named one of the 20 most influential photographers of all time by Photo District News, his many honors include an Order of the British Empire (OBE) from Queen Elizabeth II, and the Royal Photographic Society’s Centenary Medal for lifetime achievements. Controlling the Qualities of “Photographic” Light

with Joseph Meehan Mar 10, 2017: 9:30am - 5:30pm Description How much do you know about the physical and “emotional” qualities of the light used to take your photographs? Do you let your camera’s auto functions control such basic qualities as exposure, color balance and even focus? Today’s modern digital cameras are certainly technological marvels with their “auto everything” controls. But the photographer still needs a good working knowledge of how light controls the appearance of everything in a scene. Otherwise, it will be the camera’s auto technology and not the photographer’s vision that dominates much of the outcome. In this seminar, Joseph Meehan will first review the key physical characteristics of photographic light and the specific camera functions that record those characteristics. He will then explain and illustrate how the photographer can recognize such influential conditions as the effect of light direction, how color and contrast in a scene can be altered, how to determine the most appropriate exposure setting, how the speed of an exposure alters the way light portrays a subject and even how different lens focal lengths have an influence on the way light is recorded.
